When a move tells you to, roll 2d6 + a stat. Never otherwise.
| 10+ | You do it. Clean. |
| 7–9 | You do it, but — a cost, a complication, a choice. |
| 6− | The GM says what happens instead. It's worse than you thought. |
You don't roll to see if something is interesting. You roll to see what it costs.
EDGE — speed, violence, nerve.
WIRE — machines, systems, the cable, cold competence.
FACE — reading people, leverage, lying well.
VEIL — the part of you that notices what shouldn't be there.
Did we learn something true about the Stand? Everyone marks XP. · Did someone act on their Dark Secret in the open? They mark XP. · Did anyone burn a Bond? They mark XP.
Three XP: raise a stat by +1 (max +3) · take a move from another playbook · heal a burned Bond by making it about someone new.
You opened a length of cable that hadn't been opened since 1903, and the traffic on it was current.
Take a Symptom each mark. Unlock a Static Move at 1, 3 and 5. At 5 you are observed — take your Moment, then the GM takes you.
HarmYou may always mark Static instead of Harm. Say what your body does that a body shouldn't.
XPWhat came up the wire during the outage that you never logged, and who has started asking about it?
Eleven thousand ships fly this flag and not one of them has ever been here. You know why. You typed it.
Which vessel did you flag that you shouldn't have, and what is still aboard her?
Channel 11 has a duty supervisor nobody has met. She is unfailingly helpful. You have been talking to her for nine years.
You begin play already able to use your first Static Move.
HarmWhose voice comes through most often, and what did you fail to do for them?
They rebuilt you for a pressure the body was never meant to hold. You are grateful. That's the part that worries people.
Rated for Depth: trade Harm for Static freely — and take +1 forward when you do.
XPWho was on the other end of your line, on the dive you don't talk about?
You determined a cause. You signed it. The wreck has not accepted your finding.
What did you leave out of the report, and who countersigned it?
You went overboard on the eleventh. They paid out on the nineteenth. You walked up the wharf on the twenty-second.
You are already halfway down. Play like someone who knows it.
HarmWho filed the claim on you, and what did they ask you to do about it?
Nobody was ever from here. Your family has been from here for a hundred and forty years anyway, and somebody has to keep the list.
What did the Watch decide, that you carried out, that you have never told anyone?
On a 6−, or whenever they look at you.
| 1 | Every clock in the room agrees, and all of them are wrong by the same amount. |
| 2 | The surf stops. Not quietens — stops. For as long as it takes to notice. |
| 3 | Standing water is tilted, very slightly, toward something. |
| 4 | A count comes out at eleven when there are nine of you. |
| 5 | Someone repeats, word for word, a thing you thought thirty seconds ago — and apologises. |
| 6 | A door, a stair, a corridor that is on the plan and has never been there. |
| 1 | You are eleven minutes ahead of every clock on the island, and you can prove it. |
| 2 | You've stopped hearing the surf. It's still there. Everyone else hears it. |
| 3 | Standing water tilts slightly toward you. |
| 4 | You know the name of the ninth hour. It hurts to hold. |
| 5 | There's a day missing and you can feel the edge of it, like a seam. |
| 6 | Someone at work has started calling you by a name nobody gave you, and correcting themselves, and doing it again. |
Rolled a duplicate? It gets worse. Say how.
You cannot advance a Ring until you've landed one Terror and one Temptation in it.
| 1 · Normal | A job. Money, a client, a deadline. Exactly one detail is wrong, and nobody comments on it. |
| 2 · First Sign | The wrong detail isn't isolated. Something is repeating. |
| 3 · Escalation | People start lying to them specifically. Something is now being helpful. |
| 4 · Revelation | The rules are visibly broken. Theorize usually happens here. |
| 5 · Dissolution | Consequences. Who is observed. What the Port doesn't remember by morning. |
The Bleed — six segments. The hour arriving at this location. Advance on a missed roll that touched the other side, a 7–9 choice that says so, a new Ring, or any hard move you want made visible. When it fills, it arrives. Not a monster — an event. Something becomes true that cannot be untrue.
The Aperture — eight segments, the season. Eight islands were named. The last three segments are the ones that were never on the chart. Advance when a case ends, when someone is observed, on a failed Theorize, and whenever the Tide Watch loses a record.
A Clue is a hole in the world, not a piece of a puzzle you've already solved. Eight to twelve per case, on cards, face up.
GOOD — The tower's water usage tripled after the last tenant left.
BAD — People are living in the flooded lobby. (explains itself)
GOOD — Her last transmission was logged four minutes after the vessel went down. It's a description of the vessel going down.
BAD — She could see the future. (that's a theory, not a clue)
